St Henry's Cathedral Parish has booked a bus to and from Kuopio for those who wish to attend the Consecration Mass at St Joseph's Church on Saturday, May 3rd. If you are keen to be part of the festivities but don't feel up to a gruelling day on the parish bus, Marja Huttunen, whose parents live in Kuopio, offers some alternative suggestions. 1) Fly with Finnair (€88) I've bought direct air tickets from Helsinki to Kuopio (the flight takes 40 min one way) and I paid €88 for the return tickets. There are no cheap alternatives that allow you to go there and back the same day, but if you fly the day before or return the following day, there are deals to be had. (But hurry up, as the prices go up as we approach the date of the Consecration.) 2) Onnibus (from Helsinki, Turku Jyväskylä etc. A single return from Helsinki €28,80) Onnibus offers reasonable prices, though same-day returns are again out of the question. An example schedule by bus would be: departure from Helsinki at 2.30 p.m. on May 2, arrive in Kuopio at 9.15 p.m. (a couple of stops on the way). Return dearture Sunday at 1 p.m., arrive in Helsinki at 7.45 p.m. at a cost of €14,90 each way. Click here for more information about St Joseph's | 3) Special offer by train You may get there and back again the same day by train and VR has special offers, so keep checking the site. The train trip takes 4-5 hours each way. Help with accommodation? If you need help finding reasonable accommodation in Kuopio, I can lend a hand with that as well, as I do that sort of thing for work all the time, which provides me with the requisite skills and networks. Happy about St Joseph's Church, with best regards, Marja Huttunen Member of St Henry's Parish E-mail: marja.huttum@hotmail.com |
Are you interested in going to a cultural event, but don't feel comfortable going on your own? Or do you not know what type of activities are available in Helsinki? The solution to your problems is a culture companion, i.e. a volunteer who has been trained by the City of Helsinki for the express purpose of helping you out!
A culture companion will provide the company you need, book the tickets and - if need be - even give you a hand to find your way to the event. A culture mate also gives you a chance to improve your Finnish language skills at the same time!
